Here is a portion of an old 8mm movie I made back in the early 1960s. Back in those days, my family would travel South to Florida every Summer for a vacation. My Kodak movie camera was still new to me, but I wouldn't miss an opportunity to shoot something new. We mostly traveled to St. Petersburg, which is on the West coast of Florida. My Dad loved the area and there were a lot of interesting places to film. You'll see a lot of the old sites including The St Petersburg Pier and downtown St Pete along Pasadena and Central Avenues. Also shown is Webbs City - World's Most Unusual Drug Store. Some of the residential areas are shown that bordered Pasadena. St Petersburg By Night includes many of the same areas as seen by the neon lights. Also included is a rare shot of McDonalds advertising their 15c hamburgers! Finally are a few scenes of Treasure Island (by night) along Gulf Blvd. The city has grown and expanded over the years but here's a look back to the way it was over 46 years ago. Recently I came across several more 3/4" U-Matic videotapes of my old NightLife Show which ran on cable TV during the 1980s. This episode is about electric toy trains made by Lionel. Kerry, along with photographer Rick Zimmer, show a 1962 promo film made by Lionel. As interest in toy trains may have been fading in the 1960s, Lionel brought out a series of trains that were more up to date by adding rockets & launchers from the Space Race. This program was made during my series final year. I see that I had grown a beard & was at my heaviest. Ouch! The opening title sequence was different than previous years as well. Thanks to Rustyfan for this great capture. In 1960 Daytona Superspeedway hosted this sportsman race. 68 cars entered into the race, back then there were a maximum of 68 cars in a superspeedway race. Coming out of turn four 37 cars get into a massive wreck where at least six cars get on their roofs. Amazingly, evryone walked away from this. By the way, I am really getting tired of people having arguments that lead to name calling and slander. If I see a comment that put another member down or uses any derogatory language, I will delete it and any replies to it immediately. Also, if you do not like racing or think it is a sport, that's fine, but at least give some logical thought into a comment that you post. Once again I travel out to the Space Coast to record a night launch of the shuttle Discovery, STS-128. This is one of the final night launches and I wanted to record it in a special way. Rather than using a traditional video camera, I decided to use a Nikon D-90 digital still camera and record the event in the Movie Mode. Before the night launch takes place, I demonstrate how to set-up the Nikon in order to record video. I also go over how to shoot video on a simpler Point & Camera. Armed with this information, I leave for Cape Canaveral to record the Midnight Launch. The flight of Discovery, STS-128, is the 30th mission to the International Space Station. It's the 37th flight for Discovery, with only six shuttle missions remaining. Crew members will install new gear and take three space walks. The mission lasts thirteen days. During the first qualifying race, Richard Petty flies over the first turn wall on lap 37 of the 40 lap event (the race is shorted to 39 laps as a result of the crash). As Richard is leaving the infirmary, he gets word that his father Lee has been in a crash during the 2nd qualifying race. Lee Petty and Johnny Beauchamp make contact and fly over the turn 4 wall, also on lap 37 of the event. Lee is seriously injured in the wreck and would spend the next 4 months in the hospital, essentially ending his driving career.
